How event permits work in Montréal

  • Events on public property such as streets, parks and squares are permitted by the borough (arrondissement). Rules, fees and deadlines differ between boroughs, and a permit is needed before the event.
  • Local borough events generally have to be non-commercial, free and open to the public. Most boroughs require a legally incorporated non-profit in good standing, though some accept residents or businesses sponsored by a recognized organization.
  • Small gatherings, commonly between 25 and 60 people depending on the borough, often need no permit. These permit-exempt gatherings cannot use amplified sound, tents, canopies, generators or inflatables.
  • Borough permits typically take 30 to 90 days, and late applications often cost more.
  • Larger events of metropolitan scale (Événement public d’envergure métropolitaine) go through the Service de la culture, Division festivals et événements. Only incorporated non-profits may apply, at least 90 days ahead.

Tents, stages and amplified sound

  • Tents and canopies are barred at permit-exempt gatherings and need authorization at permitted events.
  • Amplified sound at permitted events needs approval. One borough caps amplified sound at 80 dBA measured 35 metres from the source.
  • Some boroughs ask for a site layout plan, and some require separate permits for sound devices, outdoor projection or equipment.
  • The City pages we reviewed do not state fire or building-permit size thresholds for tents or temporary stages, so ask your borough what applies to your structure.
  • Music performances may also need a SOCAN licence.

Parks and venues

We list these as public information only; it does not mean we have worked at any of them.

  • Parc du Mont-Royal: under 50 people needs no authorization. Events of 50 to 3,000 people need prior authorization at least 90 days ahead. Tents and amplified sound need authorization, and tents are allowed only in designated areas.
  • Parc Frédéric-Back: the same rule of 50 to 3,000 attendees, 90 days ahead.
  • Parc Jean-Drapeau: the park operator rents venues for corporate events and weddings, including La Toundra, Pavillon de la Jamaïque and Espace Paddock.
  • Place des Festivals in the Quartier des spectacles and Parc La Fontaine in Le Plateau-Mont-Royal are also City-listed public places; check their booking rules.

Season and weather

Environment Canada’s normals for Montréal-Trudeau (1981–2010) show average daily temperatures of about 13.4 °C in May, 18.6 °C in June, 21.2 °C in July and 15.5 °C in September. Thunderstorms occur on about 5 days a month in June to August, and rain falls on 12 to 14 days a month from May to October. Snow is possible from November to April, which makes winter outdoor setup much harder, and frost is possible in May and October. A weather plan for stages and tents is worth building in.

Major annual events

Montréal’s large events, including the Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada and Piknic Électronik at Parc Jean-Drapeau, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal and Osheaga, fill the summer calendar. For a private or community event, book equipment early for June to August.
